Research and development

The Lombardini Research and Development Center is the heart of the Group’s engine research program. It is also where the company’s products are conceived, designed and developed.

Boasting 90 professionals (one-third of whom are engineers) that have been carefully selected based on their experience, skills and passion for their job, the Center carries out a full range of activities on our products.
  • Development of specifications
  • Technical benchmarking of the competition
  • General and detailed design
  • Construction plans
  • Calculations with dedicated software
  • Kinematic, dynamic, thermal and structural simulations
  • Experimentation and reliability testing
  • Targeted research for specific sectors
  • Activities coordinated with outside Research Centers
  • Characterization of the product and its relative versions
  • Validation of technical authorizations
  • Verification of applications

In particular, laboratory operations are carried out in the following facilities:
  • 20 engine development chambers
  • 10 durability test stations
  • 2 chambers for measuring diesel engine emissions
  • 2 chambers for measuring gasoline engine emissions
  • Engine inclination test bench
  • Thermal shock test bench
  • Test bench for automatic variators
  • Refrigerated chamber for cold tests
  • Sound lab with anechoic chamber
  • Injection systems laboratory
  • Aerodynamic laboratory
  • Dust chamber for testing filters

The training of researchers, designers and experimenters is based on a concept that the engine is a part of the product chain. It is considered essential to know what has come before and what comes after, that is, the technology that was used and the latest developments in components. And, one must be familiar with the requirements and the mission profile of the machines the engines will end up powering.
