Lombardini Marine Cup 2009

The grand finale of the Lombardini Cup will be held at Sistiana on October 4, when the final leg of the celebrated circuit of regattas held by Lombardini Marine will take place.

Also participating will be the girls on the Stelle Olimpiche (Olympic Stars) team, the patronesses of the circuit. It’s the first team in Italy (and perhaps in the world) made up of female Olympic athletes only. Even though its members come from different athletic disciplines and environments, the group took shape spontaneously to share a passion for sports and to put themselves to the test by forming a single crew on a single boat. The Team now consists of some 30 athletes and includes famous sports figures such as Margherita Grambassi, Giulia Quintavalle, Maurizia Cacciatori and Manuela di Centa.

The awards ceremony will be held at the Lombardini Marine stand at the Genoa International Boat Show on Wednesday October 7, when an LMG 4000 power unit will be presented to the winner of the Lombardini Cup, as selected by a prestigious jury made up of Giulio Guazzini, Cino Ricci and Giovanni Soldini.

The Lombardini Cup has united some of the most interesting sailboat events in Italy and abroad under a single name. Over the circuit’s 11 legs, more than 800 boats and 6000 sailors have faced off in regattas-between-buoys requiring great technical skill (including the Italia Cup and the selection for the ORC Italian Championships), in offshore sailing runs along stunning archipelagos in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, and in events reserved for prestigious classes.

The main goal of the Lombardini Cup is to promote the most noble aspects of sport and passion for the sea and the environment, but without overdoing it, and by associating physical effort with the values of fairness, following the rules, and friendship.

Thus, the decision to have the Stelle Olimpiche as patronesses is highly appropriate, since this team of champions in their specialties reconciles competitive commitment with wholesome fun to promote and promulgate the culture of a healthy sport.
